📝 Full Description
This 3-hour walking tour explores a lesser-known side of Athens through its historic neighborhoods and courtyard houses, offering a journey into everyday life before modern apartments reshaped the city. Starting in Thiseio, the walk continues through Petralona, Gazi, Kerameikos, and Metaxourgeio before ending in Psyrri—districts where neighborhood structure and courtyard life were deeply interconnected.
Each area reveals a different layer of social history: Kerameikos, once the ancient potters’ quarter, later became a working-class district; Gazi developed around the industrial gasworks; while Psyrri grew into a dense neighborhood of artisans and workshops.
At the heart of the experience lie both the Athenian neighborhood and the Greek avli—the courtyard—as ways of living. Together, they formed the social framework of the city, where daily life unfolded collectively.
As the route unfolds, Athens reveals its hidden layers. Along Evripidou Street, a concealed 6th-century church appears, tucked within a courtyard and built on ancient remains, where a Corinthian column pierces its roof—an image of the city’s continuity.
Rather than focusing on stops, the tour follows the city as a living document, exploring how neighborhoods and courtyards shaped everyday life in pre-war Athens. Led by a certified guide and archaeologist, it concludes in Psyrri with an optional brunch.
Not just a walk, but a way to experience how Athens has truly been lived.
